Understanding keyword density

Just as much as the words “Search Engines” has become popular the words “keyword density” has tagged along. This is because these words go hand in hand when it comes to search engines and search engine page results. In a literal note, keyword density is defined as the number of times a certain keyword or phrase is being used on web pages in comparison to the total number of words on the said webpage. When we talk about search engine optimization, keyword density is one of the main reasons and one of the determining factor for the relevance of the web page and in the late 1990’s this has been the basis for the rankings on the different search engines.

Understanding keyword density

Since the main goal for companies and those running web pages is to be on the top in the ranks of the different search engines, companies have abused this keyword density. This is done when they repeatedly use the keywords on their page unnecessarily to be able to just top the ranks of the search engines. Thus the word “keyword stuffing” has been coined.

Now it has been a main requirement for most search engines to have a maximum of nine to fifteen percent of keyword density on a certain page so that you won’t be considered to be doing keyword stuffing. When you are found to be violating this, keyword search engines often penalize and even cause your webpage to be totally banned from their search engine’s page results.

  1. Allen from Outsourcing says:

It is not at all possible to rank in search engines unless and until your targeted keyword is visible in the site. The main thing to be noted is that it should not be repeated. Some say that the keyword density should be between 2 % to 7% while some say 3% to 5%.
keyword density in your content should be maintained such that it brings not only targeted traffic but also make your website more attractive and user friendly.

  2. Nice Blogger from Social Bookmarking Sites says:

It’s good to place your keyword in title of your post or article but about keyword density i don’t think you should write your content for search engines..i really don’t care about my keyword density when i write an article.

  3. Chandan from earn money online says:

I don’t think we should keep 9% to 15% keyword density. 15% is too much and search engine will penalize for this. 3% - 7% is the best. However it is agreed by many popular article directories such as Ezinearticles

  4. Toan Nguyen Minh from Make Money Online says:

I often added about 3 to 7 keywords to my articles. Vote for 3% to 5%.
    Thanks!

  5. Funny how some websites with low keyword density score higher in SE than ones with higher keyword density.
